Water conservation is a big issue for DC not only for its environmental impact, but also for it's significant impact on our pocketbook! In January the Board did an analysis of the water usage by building and we've put out more information to residents about usage rates so that everyone can see the impact of how we use water around the community.
Composting food waste is a great way to both reduce the amount of trash we create and help create new rich soil for use in our gardens. CCC partners with a local organization to compost our community food waste.
Since Cathedral Court is a collection of six different buildings, we have quite a lot of roof space. We are currently evaluating options for leasing our roofs as a move towards sustainability and to make sure we are using our spaces to their full potential.
Pollinators (and especially bees!) are very important to our food supply, so the Environmental Committee and the Landscape Committee collaborate to ensure that the plants and any herbicides used in our community are safe and beneficial to all of our pollinators.
Storm water runoff is a significant problem in the DC area so as our community evaluates projects in the park and around our buildings, we are always conscious of the impact on the amount of runoff produced. Currently we are researching the use of permeable pavers as an option for potential patio surfaces.
